Thought Leader: Kenneth Cushner Develops Educators' Intercultural Competence

Many teacher educators agree that teachers need intercultural competency skills in order to be effective educators in a 21st century classroom. Individuals and organizations in the teacher preparation space, however, disagree on what that competence looks like in the classroom and how to measure it in educators.

Partnerships Between Multiple Colleges of Education

Each college of education has its own leadership style, way of doing business, and community of learners within their faculty.  Because of these hallmark personalities, legal and accreditation complexities, and historically ingrained approaches, cross-institution collaboration can be especially challenging. As with any project, formal partnerships of this kind require well-defined roles, respect for deadlines, agreement on a common approach for tackling the work, and even formal agreements such as memoranda of understanding.

Program Providers for International Field Experiences

Many campuses and organizations offer international field experiences in education.  This list of program providers and campuses that offer these experiences can assist pre-service teacher seeking an international field placement for their student teaching experience, faculty members seeking resources on providing these opportunities to their students, or deans who want to support student teaching abroad in their colleges.

2014 International Education Institute: Enhancing Intercultural Competence in an Educational Setting

Kent State University, through its campus in Florence, Italy is offering two courses in June 2014.  

The first course, Design and Delivery of Study Abroad: While Studying Abroad is  ideal for students in higher education administration, those currently working in international offices, or teachers interested in developing international experiences for students.  

International Experiences for Faculty

Spending time abroad helps teacher educators expand their knowledge of other countries and cultures, as well as build relationships and explore common research interests with colleagues outside the United States. Faculty involved in international initiatives often become committed to them and maintain international connections, which can enrich the education of pre-service teachers. Instructors who travel are more likely to encourage students to do so.

Incentives for Internationally Minded Teacher Educators

Faculty are key in any change initiative in any discipline, and internationalization of teacher preparation is no exception.  Faculty juggle numerous commitments and demands on their time.  In order to be encouraged pursue globally focused activities, they need to be incentivized so their efforts pay off and contribute to their long term professional goals.  Different options can offer opportunities for staff to pursue these efforts.

Global Certificate Programs

Some institutions and institutional collaborations are creating certificate programs that focus on building global knowledge, skills, and dispositions of future teachers. These programs also act as laboratories for materials and course development that benefit all teacher candidates.
