The Department seeks a leader who will advocate preparing professionals to educate, serve and lead; supports faculty in their teaching, scholarship and service; promotes diversity, inclusion, equity and social justice and ensures responsible stewardship of human, capital and informational resources and engages in service and community outreach.

Department of Teaching Head Position Responsibilities:

  • Foster professional development;
  • Evaluate faculty and staff;
  • Enhance research, service and creative activity;
  • Facilitate key initiatives collaboratively among faculty;
  • Lead efforts in the Department to develop and implement a coherent vision and strategic plan;
  • Represent all dimensions of the Department to diverse audiences both internal and external to the University;
  • Administer the Department budget, facilities, schedule and all other aspects of the Department’s planning and operation;
  • Support the use of technology by faculty;
  • Work in collaboration with other academic, administrative and student affairs personnel in program and facility management;
  • Explore partnerships, resources and scholarship initiatives to enhance the Department’s development;
  • Lead recruitment of new faculty;
  • Teach one course (or equivalent coordination/supervision load or equivalent additional administrative assignment) per semester; 
  • Provide visionary leadership to promote excellence in educator preparation programs.

Education Requirements:  Earned Doctorate

Required Qualifications:

  • Record of effective teaching and scholarly activity suitable for a tenured or tenure track Associate or Full Professor appointment;
  • Teaching experience in PreK­-12 educational settings;
  • Prior leadership experience in higher education (e.g., department head, program director or coordinator) and/or in PreK­-12 educational settings (e.g., superintendent, principal, curriculum director or director of professional development);
  • Knowledge of or experience in intensive school university partnerships;
  • Knowledge of or experience with supervision of clinical field experiences or student teaching;
  • Evidence of leading and sustaining successful collaborations within and across educational entities;
  • Strong interpersonal skills;
  • Leadership style valuing transparency and shared decision making;
  • Ability to lead and engage faculty to collaboratively build, implement and amplify a coherent vision for strategic, intensive, extensive and mutually­ beneficial educational experiences that result in simultaneous renewal and powerful learning; and
  • Ability to facilitate key initiatives (e.g. adoption of a candidate performance assessment, exploration of national accreditation).

Desired Qualifications:

  • National or international recognition in education and teacher preparation;
  • Experience with teacher education in a large university setting;
  • Interest or expertise in the realm of policy or advocacy relating to teacher education, teacher evaluation or educator development;
  • Expertise related to multicultural/culturally diverse settings, especially urban or rural settings; and
  • Ability to pursue, individually or with others, relevant internal and external sources of funding for departmental initiatives.
