Many teacher educators agree that teachers need intercultural competency skills in order to be effective educators in a 21st century classroom. Individuals and organizations in the teacher preparation space, however, disagree on what that competence looks like in the classroom and how to measure it in educators. Kenneth Cushner speaks and researches extensively on this topic – helping teacher educators understand the importance of interculturally competent teachers and providing guidance on how to measure, nurture, and recognize these skills in educators at all levels.  He is a professor of Education at Kent State University.Cushner notes that teaching for intercultural competence is a multi-faceted, complex process, with challenges unique to teacher preparation. by Emily LiebtagWhile the student population grows increasingly more diverse, the pre-service population is becoming more homogenous, creating a cultural mismatch between teachers and the students they teach.  One challenge for teacher preparation programs arising from this mismatch is to facilitate intercultural sensitivity and learning among prospective teachers (Causey, Thomas, & Armento, 2000). International student teaching programs are a potential solution for the mismatch of teacher and student cultures and provide an opportunity for pre-service teachers' to experience cultures outside of their own (Blair, 2002).International student teaching programs provide an opportunity for pre-service teachers to experience cultures outside of their own (Blair, 2002) and develop some of the skills necessary to teach diverse learners. by Emily LiebtagFuture teachers need to be prepared to teach any type of learner, regardless of their background or culture. Due to the rather monocultural nature of the teaching workforce, it is vitally important to determine the ideal preparation and training methods to prepare our future teachers to be culturally responsive. Student diversity requires that teachers be interculturally competent and that their teacher preparation programs provide them opportunities to acquire intercultural and/or global competency skills as well as the ability to apply those skills to their classrooms.  International student teaching experiences have had positive impacts on developing the intercultural competence of participants – one component of culturally responsive teaching – and should be a focus for teacher education programs. ​A Cultural Mismatch Between Student and TeacherStudents in the United States are steadily growing more diverse – as evidenced in the GTE article Making the Case.  For... read more
